<image:title>Blog - When compliance comes before connection, we miss the mark on behaviour change. - When did we stop valuing the power of natural consequences, such as shame, embarrassment, remorse, humiliation, disappointment and respect for self and others?</image:title>
<image:caption>When we continue to prioritise the external consequence delivered by the educator, we diminish the value of natural consequences that generally come from within and have the power to change behaviour. As educators, we have been taught to believe that for a child to adjust their behaviour, the motivator for change has to be external but we often miss the power of internal responses children have when they have made a poor choice.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - When compliance comes before connection, we miss the mark on behaviour change. - Sitting in this small, stuffy office waiting for our lecture, reprimand and inevitable consequence was so traumatising for me. I began to cry and my older friends tried to comfort me and explain that it would be okay. For me, it did not feel okay, nor did it feel safe. In very simple terms, we were not allowed a voice, an opinion, a defense or an opportunity to contribute to repair or restoration.</image:title>
<image:caption>The punishment was handed out and the expectation was made clear. But the worst part of this whole experience was returning to my classroom. Everyone was back in their seats after recess and I was entering the walk of shame. The eyes locked on me with a mix of judgment and relief both for who they thought I was and that they were not in my position. I was in trouble and everybody knew it. This has stuck with me, and I am almost 50. I never ever went near the bannisters again. So, yes, in theory this form of behaviour management was a success. Compliance had feared me into obedience. But it did nothing for building my capacity to feel valued, respected or connected. It did quite the opposite. It added another layer to my imprint that being enough is doing the right thing…ALL THE TIME…regardless of your capacity, intent or choices. Their was no compassion for my thoughts, no time for my intent and no comprehension for the impact this had on my self worth and confidence.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - When compliance comes before connection, we miss the mark on behaviour change. - If you arrived late to work after a morning that involved a myriad of obstacles that you tried your best to manage but still fell short, which reaction would make you want to try harder or feel safe to do better:</image:title>
<image:caption>Be reprimanded and threatened with the loss of your job. A warning was placed with HR, an example was made of you to all staff via a reminder email of the importance of being on time and a consequence that you stay back late to write an apology to the boss as to why you would not behave this way again: A work colleague who offered a kind word of support, a boss who ensured they understood your load and checked in to see if there was any way they could help reduce your stress and provide access to advice and professionals to assist your stress load if needed.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This is when we as teachers begin to scratch our head and wonder why nothing seems to work and the child seems to lose the want to succeed or comply. If we don't see the true child's struggle we unintentionally disconnect with the child, and they begin slowly to disengage. Students naturally like to please, even when they don't show it. If we don't show concern for their true intentions, they stop trying to be seen. Here’s the tricky part - most students can't recall their actions or don't even know why they behaved that way. They simply had an impulsive reaction to an intense situation which hindered their ability to recall their intent.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Today as I drove you to the station, I noticed you didn’t sit on your phone, I listened as you spoke and engaged in some conversation and then as you walked up the stairs to the platform, I noticed the three times you turned back to wave. These moments are rare these days, but I will keep that feeling close and this is what gives me the motivation to hold on. I have lived my struggles of development and I know through it all I was a good person who didn’t always know the right answers. What I know beyond every piece of advice, every strategy for parenting and every sleepless night of worry, is that I am a good person who is raising a good person. I am a mother that will choose connection over correction. I will choose compassion over conformity.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Perspective and how we can see things differently. - Looking through the eyes of our children can sometimes be the shift we need most.</image:title>
<image:caption>Carefree, resilient, loyal, forgiving, fun, excitable, inspired, and enthusiastic are just some of the attributes that bring us joy when watching our children navigate life. Getting caught up in our busy schedules, deadlines, and commitments we forget to slow down and take a different perspective. I have spent the last 8 years changing the drive behind my expectations. A lifetime of jumping to learned behavioural responses to challenging situations was not healthy for me or my children. It wasn't until I began to look through the eyes of my children that I began to realise what was worth challenging and when it was worth supporting them through the challenge. I read an article many years ago that highlighted the behavioural differences when we go for a walk with our children. I began to realise that as adults we walk to get somewhere and children walk to experience something. They stop to look at the colours in the flowers, pick up sticks and trinkets, feel the breeze as they skip along the path and walk at a pace that sometimes feels slower than a snail. We are so busy ticking the job off the list that we rush past experiencing the fullness of life like they do. It is a mindful shift that can be so valuable if we walk with the perspective of our child.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Perspective and how we can see things differently. - ‘Hope is a function of struggle- we develop hope not during the easy and comfortable but through adversity and discomfort’ - Brene Brown</image:title>
<image:caption>Perspective sometimes becomes tough when we feel a sense of hopelessness. If we do not perceive a change in the near future we can begin to doubt ourselves, our choices and the concept that things will and do get better. For me, the start of a school year is emotionally draining. Having four very different personalities with all different emotional needs when dealing with and working through this time can be draining. Sometimes my exhaustion levels outweigh any positive outlook or perspective I had. Hopelessness (as described by Brene Brown) comes from a place of negative thought patterns, negative life events, or the perception that we are unable to control or change our circumstances. This is why it is so important to set realistic goals that don't</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Meltdown Madness</image:title>
<image:caption>Why are these words so important? If you begin to watch the meltdowns and the reactions your child has to a confronting situation (albeit as simple as they didn’t get longer at the park) you will begin to see a pattern. They will argue and fight your requests, they will run away from you, or they will try to ignore you, shut down and pretend the threat is not there. If you can begin to see their meltdown as a stress response, you will be able to shift your frustration to understanding and your requests to compassion. A timed warning is always a good strategy when transitioning through activities. It is something teachers do often and consistently. The visual timetable, breaking down a task, and timer on the board for transition are just a few. You are preparing the brain for what they may find difficult or challenging. They now have a warning to understand what will happen without being confronted with a feeling that is uncomfortable.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Meltdown Madness</image:title>
<image:caption>The other layer that comes into play for us as parents is judgement and managing our own dysregulation in those intense moments of dealing with a meltdown. This is evident especially when we are in public. We feel the eyes glaring and the discomfort of others. We cannot explain to onlookers that they are tired, hungry, sick or in pain. We feel like our parenting is on show. But what if we could parent in this situation without the discomfort and glares from onlookers? How would our parenting look then? I have not always been able to do this and still struggle on days when I am not feeling my best. Like any new skill we need to give ourselves time to practice and we need to provide our children with time to learn that we will support them, we will</image:caption>
